October 1, 2021 – Alexandria, VA.

New Hope Housing’s board of directors has appointed William W. Gorman as the interim executive director. Gorman will replace outgoing executive director Pam Michell, effective Oct. 1.

Gorman has a strong record of organizational leadership and experience working as the chief of operations for the Archdiocese of Washington and Franciscan University. In these roles, he oversaw the strategic planning, operations and functional areas of institutional effectiveness and growth, finance, public affairs, human resources, marketing and communications, Information Technology, and real estate.

He also served on the Boards of Directors for Catholic Charities of Washington, D.C. and Victory Housing for nearly 10 years, and plays an active role in the work of the Standards for Excellence Institute to improve and instill excellence in nonprofit organizations.

According to President of the Board of Directors, Denise Mackie-Smith, “The board is confident in Mr. Gorman’s ability to guide the NHH team through this transition period and lead the organization’s programs, initiatives and services.”

Gorman said he is looking forward to partnering with the board to direct an assessment of the organization, set strategic objectives and refine operations to maximize the performance of the agency into the future.

“The mission and sustainability of New Hope Housing is more important than ever as we work with the local community to assist those who are housing insecure or who find themselves without a home,” said Gorman. “I am pleased to step into this role and look forward to partnering with the employees, volunteers and donors to continue moving New Hope Housing forward.”

Gorman grew up in Prince George’s County Maryland and graduated from Largo High School. He received his MBA, Marketing, from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. He is married, and has six children.

He will remain in the interim position until the board of directors completes its search for a permanent executive director.

William W. Gorman headshot.“In the past, through my various roles and volunteer experiences, I have had the opportunity to work with those who are experiencing homelessness. So, when an opportunity with New Hope Housing became known to me, I moved quickly to express my interest. I am delighted to have been selected as the Interim-Executive Director of New Hope Housing.

On my first day, I had the opportunity to interact with a resident of a New Hope Housing home. He proudly showed me his room and stated on three occasions, ‘everything in here is mine.’ That simple statement conveyed not only the pride of his accomplishments but also the dignity that New Hope Housing provides by believing and investing in others.

The staff, volunteers, and supporters of New Hope Housing are a family. Whether as a volunteer that provides a listening ear, a warm meal, or a generous benefactor that helps sustain our mission – it is clear to me that New Hope Housing goes beyond simply providing shelter; it is a glue that helps hold our community together.

Thank you for all of your efforts to help those who are experiencing homelessness in our community. It is an honor to undertake this role and again I thank you for all that you do! “
