Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering at New Hope Housing! Volunteers are critical in working to end homelessness in our community. We are grateful to you for your support. We have recently updated our volunteer policies in light of changes to CDC guidance and prevalence of vaccinations.

UPDATE: January 18, 2022 – Continued suspension of onsite volunteering

Thank you for your interest in volunteering. We hope you can still fill out an application below for future service or virtual projects.

With the continued high COVID cases in Northern Virginia and the state of emergency for Virginia hospitals, we have decided to continue our suspension of onsite volunteer activities through March 1st, 2022. We are doing this out of caution and the hope that we can keep you and our guests safe.

We continue to need meals and bagged lunches. If you are signed up to prepare and drop-off hot meals or to prepare and drop off begged lunches – thank you! – and we hope you can continue to do so. We welcome new volunteers for these activities as well.

If you have any questions about volunteering and what our needs are across New Hope Housing, please contact our Community Engagement Manager, Sharon Holland, at sholland@newhopehousing.org

Thank you for your service! In these difficult days, your care and concern mean a lot to us.

UPDATE: December 23, 2021

Thank you for your interest in volunteering. We hope you can fill out an application below for future service.

With the rising COVID case counts across Northern Virginia, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to suspend onsite volunteer activities at all of our shelters and housing locations from December 24th, 2021, until at least January 15, 2022. We’re doing this now out of caution and hope that we can keep all of you and all of our guests safe.

Beginning on December 24th, our main volunteer opportunities available will be providing meals and bagged lunches. If you are currently signed up to prepare and drop off meals, thank you, and we hope you still can do so. There are tables outside or just inside the door of each program for meal drop-offs. We hope to reactivate some of our online activities soon after the Christmas holiday.

All of our shelters and housing programs remain open and nearly all are at full capacity. We do still need your support especially for additional meals. If you would like to provide a hot meal or prepare bagged lunches sometime in the next few weeks, please be in touch with us.

We’ll try to be in touch with everyone on the schedule for the next few weeks to discuss alternative service options.

We’re continuing to evaluate policies and procedures for the health and safety of our guests, staff, and you. Thanks again for your support, your patience, and your understanding.

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season – and a brighter year ahead in 2022!

UPDATE May 19, 2021:

After 14 months of remote and virtual volunteering, we are so excited to invite volunteers to serve on-site with us at our shelter programs. We are prioritizing individual volunteer opportunities, so some opportunities that were available pre-pandemic might not be available just yet, including group opportunities. We hope to expand soon for those opportunities.

We are asking that volunteers do the following to serve on-site with New Hope Housing:

  1. Confirm that they are fully vaccinated (we will not be making copies of vaccination cards, simply asking that volunteers confirm with us)
  2. Attend a virtual training for orientation
  3. Schedule service ahead of time via VICNet (no day of drop ins)
  4. Check in at the front desk, follow current CDC protocol in place at shelters (temp and symptoms check), and sign in to VICTouch
  5. Wear a face covering and volunteer identification while in the shelter and social distance as needed
  6. Log out of the shelter using VICTouch at the end of service

On-site volunteer opportunities will be available at the Kennedy Shelter, Bailey’s Shelter and Supportive Housing, and the Residential Program Center. For a full list of available opportunities, please visit http://bit.ly/NHHVolDirectory. Volunteer opportunities will be available beginning on June 7th.

Our first virtual orientation will be on Thursday, June 3rd 6:30 p.m. It will last about one hour, and we will go over available opportunities, changes in procedures, and answer any questions that you may have. Please log in to VICNet (http://bit.ly/NHHVICNet) to RSVP for the orientation. We will be scheduling addition dates for the orientation, so please keep an eye out for additional dates!

If you are unable to log in to VICNet, please contact Sami at ssmyth@newhopehousing.org!

We will continually be reevaluating our policies and procedures for the health and safety of our guests, staff, and you. We’re so grateful for your patience and understanding during this time.

For questions and concerns, please contact Sami directly at ssmyth@newhopehousing.org or 703-799-2293 ext. 11.
