Yesterday morning (February 17), a sprinkler pipe burst on the 2nd floor of Mondloch Place, a 20-unit residential building for adults who were chronically homeless. Staff immediately contacted Fairfax County officials and the fire department who shut off all power and water in order to assess damage. Five apartments have water damage as does the community room, computer area, and staff offices.

All residents have had to move out, but we have ensured that each resident has a place to stay while the building undergoes repairs. Five residents were relocated to Mondloch House shelter, three residents were moved to Kennedy Shelter, two were able to stay with friends, and seven residents were moved to hotels. New Hope Housing case managers are visiting each resident during this time. We are working with Fairfax County agencies and the Red Cross as repairs are made and we hope we can have everyone back into their apartments within a week.

We need your help with food and supplies!

1.   For residents relocated to hotels, we are collecting gift cards to restaurants near their hotel including Denny’s, Chipotle, Taco Bell, and Subway. We will also happily accept gift cards to Giant and Safeway to help residents purchase food and other supplies. If you can deliver gift cards for food, please mail or drop them off at our administrative office at 8407-E Richmond Highway, Alexandria VA 22309 in an envelope labeled “Mondloch Place”

2.   For the residents relocated to other shelters, we are asking volunteers to prepare hot meals for up to 12 adults, along with paper plates and utensils. These can be delivered to Mondloch House, located at 3510 Lockheed Blvd, Alexandria VA 22306. If you would like to prepare and deliver meals, please contact Nicole Dillon at ndillon@newhopehousing.org to coordinate delivery date and time.

3.   Finally, we do not yet know the extent of damage to residents’ personal belongings, but if you would like to donate Target or Walmart gift cards so we can take residents shopping after they move back in, please mail them to our admin office. All other monetary donations may be made by clicking here.

If you have any other questions about donations or need a receipt, please contact Jan-Michael Sacharko at jsacharko@newhopehousing.org or 703-799-2293 ext 27.

Thank you all for your support and we promise to keep you updated as we make progress.
