New Hope http://www.newhopehousing.org It's time to rethink homelessness Tue, 15 May 2012 19:57:43 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.3.1 YOU can Help the Homeless–without WALKING! http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2870 http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2870#comments Tue, 08 May 2012 19:23:39 +0000 admin http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2870 The Help the Homeless Program has officially begun!!  Did you notice we didn’t say “Walkathon”?  That’s right:  the Help the Homeless Program has gone community-wide, so that every club, every business, every neighborhood, every faith community, every gathering, can host a Help the Homeless Event (with no walking!) and help New Hope Housing raise funds for our work with homeless families and individuals.  A Help the Homeless Event, held May 1 – Nov 4, will make every dollar donated more valuable, because event participants are “counted” in the same way that walkers were counted in previous years.  And if we have 4,000 participants in events held for New Hope Housing, we will earn a $50,000 bonus!   Here are some event ideas:

Host a neighborhood “Help the Homeless” cookout, and ask all attendees to register as a participant, and pay the registration fee ($20 for youth, $30 for adults)

Host a “Help the Homeless Rubber Duck Race” at your community pool (with permission), and ask participants to register and pay the fee.  Provide a prize for the winning duck-owner, to make it more fun!

Host a “Help the Homeless Coffee Hour” at your place of work.  Invite your co-workers to register–we’ll be glad to come and share a brief presentation about homelessness–we’ll even bring bagels!

Host a “Help the Homeless Campout” for your youth group at your faith community.

Encourage your church’s VBS to have a “Help the Homeless Day”.

Host a “Help the Homeless Wine Tasting Party”!

The possibilities are endless–just contact Chris (cbramante@newhopehousing.org) or Michelle (mjannazo@newhopehousing.org) to discuss ideas.

And for those who really LIKE to walk, we’ll be inviting you to join us for the Acacia Federal Rock and Stroll in September.  And for those who just want to give to support other Help the Homeless participants, we welcome your support to register our public school walkers and our residents.

]]> http://www.newhopehousing.org/?feed=rss2&p=2748 0 Scouts Deliver! http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2734 http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2734#comments Tue, 27 Mar 2012 12:18:58 +0000 admin http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2734 Eagle candidate Spencer Peters delivered 110 personal hygiene kits this week for the residents of New Hope Housing!  Each kit contains shampoo, soap, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, toothbrush, and hairbrushes/combs.  Spencer collected donations from the community and from his church, Fort Belvoir Chapel.  With monetary donations and gift cards, Spencer purchased the items for the kits.  Our thanks to Spencer, and our congratulations on his soon-to-be Eagle status!  Also delivering the goods this week were the Girl Scouts from Troop 1899.  The girls brought 15 large containers of laundry detergent, 8 large bags of toiletries, and Girl Scout Cookies!!  These items will be delivered to the residents in all of our programs and will be greatly appreciated!  Thank you, Scouts, and thank you, community, for your continued support of the families and individuals of New Hope Housing.

]]> http://www.newhopehousing.org/?feed=rss2&p=2534 0 Goodbye, Mondloch House Family Shelter, Hello, “Next Steps”! http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2408 http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2408#comments Tue, 13 Dec 2011 18:30:37 +0000 admin http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2408 With tears and many memories, New Hope Housing staff said goodbye in November to Mondloch House Family Shelter, where hundreds of families have found “shelter and the tools to build a better life.” The family shelter opened in 1983 to serve 12 families, and expanded in 1991 to serve 18 families. The family shelter, “officially” Mondloch House II, shared the location on Lockheed Boulevard with Mondloch House I, a small shelter for eight adults. Mondloch House Family Shelter provided families with resources for education, employment, a wide range of life skills classes, help in finding housing, and special services and activities for children. New Hope Housing staff and hundreds of volunteers have had the privilege to work with and share the joys of many families as they worked to rebuild their lives and return to stable housing in the community.

 The Mondloch House II building will become “The Residences at Mondloch,” 20 affordable efficiencies, with support services, rented to single adults moving out of homelessness.  Renovation is expected to begin in March.

Homeless families is south Fairfax County will now be served in a scattered site emergency shelter program using apartments. The program will still provide the same array of services, with the added benefits of privacy and greater independence for each family.

And so, we continue the journey that began in 1983 – we take the “next steps” in helping homeless families.  Our new program, named “Next Steps Family Program,” will continue to provide hope and hospitality, dignity and respect, and shelter and tools to build a better life for homeless families in our community.

As a community-based organization, much of our work depends on you, our supporters and partners in the community, to be successful. We invite and encourage you to take the next steps with us! With our new program structure, some of the ways
you provide support will change:

  • Food donations may be taken to the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter, 9155 Richmond Highway, unless there have been other arrangements made with Martha Faconer, our Director of Operations.
  • We cannot take furniture or household goods at the Kennedy Shelter; we will post on our website and Facebook page when such items are needed, and will make arrangements for pick up or delivery.
  • Clothing may be donated to Rising Hope United Methodist Church or Groveton Baptist Church. Both congregations maintain clothing closets available free to our residents.
  • Volunteer-led activities for families and children will continue as soon as we secure space for group programs. Please keep in contact with Chris Bramante, our Volunteer Coordinator, for future volunteer opportunities.

Though we say farewell to the old family shelter building, we look forward to continuing to help families in need, working together to build a stronger, healthier community for all. Thank you for your continued support and participation in our work!

]]> http://www.newhopehousing.org/?feed=rss2&p=2372 0 Help the Homeless Walkathon Saturday! http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2328 http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2328#comments Fri, 18 Nov 2011 19:28:27 +0000 admin http://www.newhopehousing.org/?p=2328 Walk with  us tomorrow (Saturday, November 19) at the National Mall, 8:30 a.m. as we join together with thousands of people from Virginia, Maryland, and DC, walking to end homelessness in our community!  For several months, students at area schools have been participating in “mini-walks” on their campuses, learning about homelessness, raising awareness about homelessness, and raising funds to help end homelessness.  Now its our turn!  You can register onsite, and then meet at 8:30 at the letter “N”—look for our New Hope Housing signs!  This is the final year for the walk at the National Mall, so come be a part of a great tradition.  See you there!
